About ACT
ACT ( Acceptance Commitment Therapy) was developed by high impact psychologist, Steven Hayes, in 1982. It has since been developed and tested by behavioural psychologists and is being successfully used worldwide. It is a mindfulness based behavioural therapy with the aim of helping people to create a rich and meaningful life.
ACT guides you to accept the pain that inevitably accompanies life events, but encourages you to take effective values-based action, in which you are present and engaged. You learn to not be overwhelmed by negative thoughts and feelings, but to be aware of them and take positive action so that the day is not side-tracked by unhelpful behaviour. This technique has been widely researched and has produced extremely positive results.
WHAT IS ACT?
Values (Know what matters)
Contacting the present moment (Be here and now)
Defusion (Detaching from unhelpful thoughts)
Acceptance (Open up to painful feelings)
Self-awareness (Learn to tune in with your “observing self”)
Committed action (Do what it takes)
