Several years ago Kate Lindsay became very concerned about the levels of stress and anxiety she was witnessing not only in the classroom, but also in the world around her. She realised she wanted to do something about it…

Kate is the creator and teacher of this life-changing new programme, MyDirection. Kate is a secondary school teacher with 30 years of teaching experience. She has a BA (Hons), Diploma of Teaching , LTCL (teaching speech and drama) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Enterprise.

Why did she create the programme?

Concerned about the levels of stress and anxiety she was witnessing, not only in the classroom, but also among her colleagues, Kate began reading widely and started to realise that stress and anxiety was becoming not only a national, but in fact a global issue in 1st world countries. Wanting to do something to help people to feel better about life, Kate left teaching and completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Enterprise where she created a programme to alleviate stress and anxiety levels.

“As a result of extensive research as part of my Postgraduate studies I have developed an eight-week Well-being programme called MyDirection,” she says.

“MyDirection is an interactive programme based on a psychological intervention called ACT that has been developed and tested by behavioural scientists and is being successfully used worldwide. In essence ACT is an evidence-based “driver’s education course for living”. ACT training helps develop the psychological flexibility to rise above stress and anxiety.”

Over the space of five years Kate has taught 265+ MyDirection sessions, across age groups from primary school students through to tertiary and beyond.

“I have a passion for helping people to find their true direction and  to help them find the joy that exists in this wonderful thing called life. I’ve seen so many people benefit in so many different ways from this programme. It seems that no matter your age, your sex, your walk of life –by the end of the programme you will become a calmer, more motivated and empowered version of your former self,” says Kate.

Five years on, Kate has created a range of courses; for the workplace, one-on-one individual programmes, group programmes for adults, as well as her renowned programme for students. No matter the person or the group, Kate can offer a package tailored to your needs.

Kate has an infectious energy and, for Janine and myself, her ability to listen and give us hope was invaluable. She taught us how to be grateful every day and to try to
declutter our minds through mindfulness. I would recommend Kate to anyone. I think
she is really gifted with her ability to connect with children and adults. I don’t think my daughter and I would be as well as we are now if we had not seen her.

 About ACT

ACT ( Acceptance Commitment Therapy) was developed by high impact psychologist, Steven Hayes, in 1982. It has since been developed and tested by behavioural psychologists and is being successfully used worldwide. It is a mindfulness based behavioural therapy with the aim of helping people to create a rich and meaningful life.

ACT guides you to accept the pain that inevitably accompanies life events, but encourages you to take effective values-based action, in which you are present and engaged. You learn to not be overwhelmed by negative thoughts and feelings, but to be aware of them and take positive action so that the day is not side-tracked by unhelpful behaviour. This technique has been widely researched and has produced extremely positive results.

WHAT IS ACT?

  1. Values (Know what matters)

  2. Contacting the present moment (Be here and now)

  3. Defusion (Detaching from unhelpful thoughts)

  4. Acceptance (Open up to painful feelings)

  5. Self-awareness (Learn to tune in with your “observing self”)

  6. Committed action (Do what it takes)
